Entry on to the Level 5  squad  will usually take place at the start of each new swimming year, however, at the discretion of the head coach swimmers may be allowed to join the programme during the season. Swimmers on the programme would normally be between 14 and 18 years of age and have started their adolescent growth spurt, swimmers entering the group will generally be of national standard and / or have been identified as having the attributes required to excel at senior level.

Entry will either be via the Level 4 squad or by application to the head coach. All swimmers are expected to be fully committed to the following aims and objectives:


  • Swimmers in National / Regional finals and to achieve medals
  • Swimmers to be selected for National / Regional talent programmes
  • Swimmers to be selected for Regional Teams

The Objectives of the BMSS Level 5 programme are to provide an environment where each swimmer can:

  • Develop and maximise technical skills on all 4 strokes
  • Continually improve their knowledge of stroke mechanics
  • Further develop tactical and mental skills required to assist and improve performance
  • Improve their knowledge of nutrition and hydration and its application during training and competition
  • Be introduced to energy systems and cyclical training
  • Improve and optimise their aerobic conditioning
  • Be introduced to and develop anaerobic conditioning (Race Pace / Preparation)
  • To build stability and strength through more intense land conditioning
  • Be educated on time management, healthy lifestyles and competition protocols
  • Develop and implement an appropriate competition plan
  • Develop IM Skills and specialised distance / stroke skills
  • Gain greater responsibility for swimming commitment and performance
